Dr Allan Shell is an UNSW Medicine Alumnus, Academic GP and a Visiting Fellow to the School of Psychiatry’s Dementia Collaborative Research Centre (DCRC) at UNSW.

Since 2009, he has worked on a number of general practice based projects with Prof Henry Brodaty and other members of the DCRC, as well as co-authored peer reviewed published articles related to that work.

Allan has a long background in private general practice, and past experience in working with local GPs in continuing medical education programs, and community aged care programs, through the former Eastern Sydney Division of General Practice.

Through 2013-14, he was Project Lead and Facilitator of a major Alzheimer's Australia NQDCI funded project that has upskilled over 1,500 GPs, around Australia, to improve the outcome of “a more timely diagnosis of dementia" amongst GP patients. This project has continued with the support of Alzheimer’s Australia and with La Trobe University’s Dementia Training Study Centre (DTSC) in Victoria. This project also aims to generate better community awareness of dementia, through general practice and its allied health services, particularly for families and carers of persons with Alzheimer's disease or other types of dementia.

Recently Allan has joined the HALT project as a consultant "liaison GP”, at the DCRC, which aims to improve the better management of medications for patients with dementia in residential aged care facilities.
