Project Description | The project, funded by Ageing, Disability and Homecare under the NSW Dementia Services Framework, will translate knowledge gained from the Koori Growing Old Well Study (KGOWS) and an initial pilot of the Koori Dementia Care Project (KDCP) to develop and empower Aboriginal community dementia champions. KGOWS has established a relationship with these communities. A key focus of this model will be to establish the knowledge wants and needs of each community then target, train and mentor appropriate people within each community to provide that information. A community focused approach will acknowledge that each Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander group has unique community structures, history and networks. The emphasis of this project is to utilize dementia resources which have already been sensitively developed for Aboriginal communities and to develop partnerships which focus on community readiness for the implementation of these resources. The intention is to additionally develop champions within Aboriginal communities who can ensure sustainability of the knowledge gained. The Indigenous Health Professionals engaged into the core project position (The Koori Community Dementia Care Project Officers) will be mentored and coached by Sharon Wall (The Project Manager) from the KGOWS team and supported by a sustainability group of experienced dementia and aboriginal resource persons who will make up the steering committee. |
