Project Description

The dementia knowledge and beliefs of persons from Italian, Greek and Chinese backgrounds were compared to third generation Australians.

Persons from each group were randomly selected from around Australia to be surveyed by telephone. Questions assessed whether dementia symptoms were recognised, what these persons thought causes dementia, where they would go for help, how likely they were to use aged care services and the stigma towards persons with dementia.

Focus groups were conducted before the survey to refine content and after the survey to identify barriers to service use and to identify methods to improve dementia knowledge.
