Project Description

The aim is to determine the relative effectiveness of exercise and psychoeducation on mood symptoms, rates of clinical depression, quality of life, cognition and function in older war widows through improving our understanding of the factors associated with both vulnerability to, and resilience to, depression in older war widows.

In particular, we wish to improve our understanding of the benefits of non-pharmacological treatments for older people with Major and Minor Depression, thereby providing an alternative to medication.

We also wish to understand whether the benefits of these treatments extend beyond mood symptons to cognitive symptons, disability and overall quality of life. The Department of Veterans Affairs was interested in developing strategies to assist this vulnerable target group.
