Project Description

Falls and falls related injuries occur commonly in hospitalised older patients with cognitive impairment and dementia.

This study looks at whether the provision of a Falls Attendant to a ward reduces the number of falls in that ward.

The Falls Attendant will be a specially trained enrolled nurse whose role will be to assess those patients at risk of falls and provide them with supervision and management over the period of the shift. The Falls Attendant will be present on the ward from 7am to 9.30pm every day of the week. Falls will also be measured in a control ward which has similar patients and similar falls rates but will not have a Falls Attendant.
