Profile

Monica is a PhD Candidate with the INSPIRED project at the DCRC-ABC. Monica is investigating lifestyle and environmental risk factors for Younger Onset Dementia (YOD), that is, dementia that is occurs before 65 years of age. She is particularly interested in the role that head injuries, alcohol, education, psychiatric illness and cardiovascular risk factors have in the development of YOD.

Monica is also a research assistant for the HALT (Halting Antipsychotics in Long Term Care) project. In this role, Monica visits residential aged care facilities around Sydney, assessing the impact of the reduced use of anti-psychotic medications in people with dementia.

Prior to her role with the DCRC, Monica lived in Adelaide and worked with people with dementia for a number of years. This included running education and support groups at Alzheimer’s Australia for people recently diagnosed with dementia, to assisting with behaviour management with DBMAS. She is a passionate advocate for risk reduction, and a Fitness Ambassador for the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing – spreading the message of healthy living in early life to reduce the risk of dementia later on.
