Scientia Professor Perminder Sachdev's research interests are in the areas of:

Neuropsychiatry:
  • Dementia (Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, lobar dementia)
  • Cognitive ageing
  • Neuroimaging (MRI, MRS, pMRI, SPECT, PET)
  • Genetics and proteomices of brain ageing and dementia
  • Drug-induced movement disorders (Akathisia, tardive dyskinesia, tardive dystonia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
  • Tourette's syndrome
  • Neuropsychiatric aspects of epilepsy
  • Neurosurgery for psychiatric disorders
Psychopharmacology and Physical Treatments in Psychiatry:
  • Neuroleptic drugs
  • Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
  • Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS)

In 2014, Professor Sachdev received the prestiguous University of New South Wales Dean’s Award for Outstanding Achievement (Academic) for research and teaching in the Faculty of Medicine. His has received an International Distinguished Fellowship Award from the American Psychiatric Association (2012) and in 2011, he received a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his services to medical research in the field of neuropsychiatry, as a clinician and academic, and to professional associations at a national and international level.

He was NSW Scientist of the Year in 2010. Prior awards include the Senior Research prize of the RANZCP in 1995 for most outstanding psychiatric research by an Australian or New Zealand psychiatrist in the preceding 2 years, and the Novartis oration of the ASPR in 2004.

Professor Sachdev was previously the president of the International Neuropsychiatry Association (2004-2006), the International College of Geriatric Psychoneuropharmacology (2012-2014) and is currently an Executive member of VASCOG. He is a member of the DCRC-ABC Core Management Committee.

International memberships include the Neurocognitive Disorders Work Group for the DSM:5, the International Advisory Group for the revision of the ICD-10 Mental and Behavioural Disorders, and the WHO ICD-11 Expert Working Group on Neurocognitive Disorders.

Current Project Interests:
  • The prevention, early detection, and effective management of neurocognitive disorders in the elderly, incorporating:
    • Sydney Memory and Ageing Study (MAS)
    • The Older Australians Twin Study (OATS)
    • The Sydney Centenarian Study (SCS), including a PhD sub-project with DCRC
    • The Sydney Stroke Study
    • The PATH Through Life (PATH) Study, with ANU.
  • Genetic and environmental contributions to amyloid burden in older Australians: a PiB-PET imaging study of twins
  • Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to enhance outcomes from computer facilitated cognitive training in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI)
  • Deep brain stimulation for obsessive compulsive disorder: a controlled investigation.
