Project Description

The Carer Support project is evaluating the effectiveness of training dementia carer support personnel to coach dementia carers in developing self-efficacy (SE) in the caring role, in person-centred caring skills and in techniques for health maintenance.

A pre/post-test, follow-up study is in process to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of the dementia carer support staff carer coaching program for 40 family caregivers of persons with moderate dementia living at home, compared with controls. More than half of all carers and persons with dementia are Chinese speakers who are being coached by 9 bi-lingual Chinese support personnel.

Carer outcomes being assessed include self-efficacy for caregiving, goal achievement, health, well-being and caring stress, and caregiving relationship.

Feasibility of continuing the coaching program includes carer completion rates, satisfaction and recommended improvements, and carer support staff recommendations and satisfaction.
