Project Description

This project will be partly based on a large and detailed study conducted in the USA, and it will form the first extensive study of QoL for people with dementia in Australian RACFs.

We propose to run the study in five states and one territory (Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, West Australia, and the ACT), collecting information from approximately 480 residents from 48 RACFs in total (10 each in QLD, NSW, VIC & WA; 5 in TAS, 3 in ACT).

We will target facilities from different areas (metropolitan, regional and rural) and provider types (profit, not for profit, government), with the number of residents sampled from each facility ranging from 5-15 depending on its size.

To gain an in-depth understanding of QoL and the factors that affect it, we will be gathering different types of information from a range of sources. By collecting QoL information from the perspective of residents as well as family and caregivers, in addition to other factors potentially affecting QoL, we intend to gain an in depth insight into QoL issues for RACF residents with dementia.

It is hoped that this will help inform the development of strategies, programs and approaches to care that will optimize the experience of people with dementia in RACFs, and ensure that they receive care designed to optimize quality of life.
