This project will involve a systematic review of studies that have investigated the effect of exposure to environmental toxins on cognition, with special emphasis on the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease or dementia.
Whether such exposure does increase the subsequent risk of dementia is a concern regularly expressed by consumers in contact with Alzheimer's Australia. While some studies have reported a possible link between a particular toxic substance and an increased risk of dementia, the literature as a whole has not been systematically reviewed.
The review will examine potential mechanisms by which exposure to pesticides and other toxins might increase dementia risk, whether the duration and type of exposure affects risk, and will attempt to quantify the effect that such exposure has on dementia risk.
