This project is part of the BPSD Guide - Development, Dissemination and Evaluation program. The Guide is part of the suite of resources, including apps and companion guides, which can be accessed on the Program Resource Page.
Background to this project
In 2013-14 DCRC-ABC developed the BPSD Guide electronic Application (App) for ipad, iphone and Android devices. The App was designed to provide quick prompts to summary information which may assist clinicians in their role of managing BPSD, in situations where it is appropriate to access electronic hand held devices.
Emerging technologies have the potential to make evidence based recommendations more accessible for use in clinical practice and increased use is anticipated in the future. With the integration of these technologies into dementia care, research is needed as to their effectiveness for the end user and the potential impact on those with dementia. In 2014 the Commonwealth Department of Social Services (DSS) provided funding to evaluate clinicians’ reported experience of using the BPSD GuideApp in the field. This project evaluated the effectiveness of this resource to guide clinical practice by providing ready access to concise information.
Results indicated that the App has the capacity to provide clinicians with ready access to evidence-based information when supporting the care of persons presenting with BPSD. Over time uptake of the BPSD Guide App has steadily increased worldwide. Outcomes from this mixed methods evaluation will inform future development and updates.
