Recently, two large scale studies have reported an approximate doubling of dementia in older veterans with a history of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), suggesting it may be an important risk factor for dementia.
There is also some evidence to suggest that Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD), frequent amongst patients with dementia, are manifested differently in veterans with a history of PTSD.
Thus, we are conducting surveys of health professionals to determine whether veterans with a history of PTSD display symptoms of dementia differently to those without PTSD.
If the answer is yes, we will also attempt to identify what issues this creates for carers, and what strategies, if any, they find useful to address these issues.
